Bear Creek Masters - 16001 Clay Rd., Houston, Texas 77084 - 281-859-8188 - This is one of the
long standing public courses in Houston. It has hosted the NCAA championships. It is a tough, but fair course...6 stars (Trey).
Bear Creek Presidents - 16001 Clay Rd., Houston, Texas 77084 - 281-859-8188 - The Presidents
course is a fairly simple, straightforward course that is great for an ailing game. I used to play it when I was struggling with my driver because of its gracious fairways...5 stars (Trey).
Bear Creek Challenger - 16001 Clay Rd., Houston, Texas 77084 - 281-859-8188 - The Challenger
course is a short, par 70 course. While it is shorter than the Presidents Course, it is more difficult...5 stars (Trey)...3.5 stars (Mark).
Bentwood Country Club - Bentwood Oaks Dr., Porter, Texas 77365 - 281-354-4653 - This
undeservedly undiscovered treat in northwest Houston sounds far away, but is only one exit past Kingwood on 59 North. The fairways and greens are larger than most and always kept in great condition...8 stars (Mark).
Black Horse: Hwy 290 and Spring-Cypress Road...Certainly one of the top twenty public
courses in Houston. The price is a little steep, but that should come down when the novelty wears off... 7 stars (Mark).
Bluebonnet Golf Club - Rt. 2, Box 3471, Navasota, Texas 77868 - 409-894-2207 - I have not played
this course in years, but I do recall it is a fun course...5 stars (Trey).
Brock Park Golf Course - 8201 John Ralston Rd., Houston, Texas 77044 - 281-456-1350 - This
course has an unusual design and is enjoyable to play...5 stars (Trey)...Although this inexpensive city course is seldom in good shape, it does have more hills and undulations than most Houston courses, so it provides a different sort of challenge...3.5 stars (Mark).
Cape Royale Golf Club - 201 Cape Royale Dr., Coldspring, Texas 77331 - 409-653-2388 - It's about
an hour's drive from most spots in Houston, but it makes for an enjoyable weekend outing. A couple of holes have spectacular views of Lake Livingston in the background, and most of the holes have challenging hills...6.5 stars (Mark).
Chambers County Golf Course - Box 1596, Anahuac, Texas 77514 - 409-267-8235 - I have not
played Chambers County since I was in high school. It is a short, but testy course...5 stars (Trey).
Clear Creek Golf Course - 3902 Fellows Rd., Houston, Texas 77047 - 713-738-8000 - A good links
style course. The best attribute of Clear Creek is the greens. For the modest green fees, the greens are exceptional. They hold well and putt true almost year round...7 stars (Trey)...7 stars (Mark).
Clear Lake - 1302 Reseda, Houston, Texas 77062 - 281-488-0252 - A fun course to play...6 stars
(Trey).
The Club at Cinco Ranch - 23030 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, Texas 77450 - 281-395-4653 -
www.cincoranchgolfclub.com - Cinco Ranch is a very enjoyable course to play. Carlton Gipson did a great job with the design and made it challenging without being overly difficult. The course has some difficult holes but it also gives you a few chances at birdies...7 stars (Trey).
Cypress Lakes Golf Course - 18700 Cypresswood Dr. - 281-304-8515 - Although it is quite a drive
for most Houstonians, this relatively new course is a fairly impressive course for the money...6.5 stars (Mark). The best thing about Cypress Lakes are the greens. They hold well and putt true. The design is pretty basic for a links course. I prefer the design at Southwyck, but the greens are better at Cypress Lakes...6.5 stars (Trey).
Cypresswood Golf Club - 21602 Cypresswood Drive, Spring, Texas 77373 - 281-821-6300 -
www.cypresswood.com - Definitely one of the best daily fee courses. I have only played the Cypress and the Creek courses, but I hear the Tradition is the real gem. The Cypress and the Creek courses are lined with trees and well-designed. The courses are fun to play and putt well. The Club does a tremendous job with tournaments...8 stars (Trey)...8.5 stars (Mark).
Del Lago Golf Resort - 600 Del Lago Blvd., Montgomery, Texas 77356 - 1-800-del-lago -
www.dellago.com - A very nice layout by Dave Marr and Jay Riviere. The course is challenging with its length and the trees...7 stars (Trey).
Eagle Pointe Golf Club - 12440 FM 3360, Mont Belvieu, Texas - 281-385-6666 -
www.eaglepointegolf.com - not played.
Evergreen - 1530 Evergreen Rd., Baytown, Texas 77520 - 281-837-9000 -
www.houstongolf.com/evergreen _point - This is a good course way out east. I enjoyed playing the course and was pleasantly surprised given the surroundings. The course is set in an industrial area near the port of Houston. Once you get there, you forget where you are and enjoy the course. The design and condition are commendable...7 stars (Trey).
The Falls Golf and Country Club Resort - 178 N. Falls Dr., New Ulm, Texas - 409-992-3125 - not
played in several years.
Fish Creek - Magnolia/Woodlands/Conroe area. A tremendous course with fast greens.
Designed by Elkington (who is often seen practicing on the putting green). 9.0 stars (Mark).
Fox Creek Golf Club - Rt. 8, Box 128F, Hempstead, Texas 77445 -281-373-1417 - not played.
Freeport Golf Club - not played.
Friendswood Golf Club - #3 Country Club Dr., Friendswood, Texas 77546 - 281-482-4653 - The
design is above average, but the course has been in poor shape for as long as I can remember. It is a shame because if the course was better kept, it would be very enjoyable...4 stars (Trey).
Galveston Island Municipal Golf Course - 1700 Syndor Lane, Galveston, Texas 77553 - 409-744-
2366 - www. galvestonmunigolf.com - If you enjoy four club wind, this is the course for you. The course is next to the Gulf of Mexico, and several holes have you hitting over the ocean. The course design is unique, and a pleasure to play. The condition is not always great, but I figure it must be tough to keep the grass in great condition with the salt air...6 stars (Trey)...4 stars (Mark).
Gleannloch Farms Golf Club - 19393 Champion Forest, Spring, Texas 77379 - 281-225-1200 -
www.golfgleannloch. com - not played.
Glenbrook Golf Course - 8205 N. Bayou, Houston, Texas 77017 - 713-649-8089 - Have not played
in years...(Trey). A challenging course with hills and long distances over the Bayou...5.5 stars (Mark).
Greatwood Golf Club - 6767 Greatwood Dr., Sugar Land, Texas 77479 - 281-343-9999 - One of my
favorite public courses in Houston. The course has exceptional character and well-designed holes. Don't be alarmed if you drive by the course on Highway 59 and see the small, thin green on the 12th hole. They are not all that small. The only complaint I have about Greatwood is that is is not a walking course...9 stars (Trey). Greatwood is my favorite public course in Houston...9.5 stars (Mark).
Green Meadows - 6138 Franz, Katy, Texas 77493 - 281-391-3670 - This is a short, straightforward
course. It is a good course to play if you are struggling with your game...3 stars (Trey).
Gus Wortham Golf Course - 7000 Capitol, Houston, Texas 77281 - 713-921-3227 - This is one of
the older courses in Houston and has the character to show it. The design is unique. The condition is below-averagae, but the green fees are cheap...5 stars (Trey).
Hermann Park Golf Club - 713-526-0077 - I have not played it since the renovations, but I was a
regular here for many years. The course design is unique and it features small undulated greens. For a short course, it can be difficult because the greens are hard to hit, and tougher to get up and down on...4 stars (Trey)...3.5 stars (Mark).
Heron Lakes Golf Club - 7910 N. Sam Houston Parkway West, Houston, Texas 77064 - 281-894-
0621 - not played.
High Meadow Ranch - www.highmeadowranchgolf.com - not played.
Houston Hills Golf Club - 9720 Ruffino, Houston, Texas 77031 - 281-933-2300 - I have not played
this course in several years. It features a very simple layout and the course condition was below average...4 stars (Trey)...2.5 stars (Mark).
Houston Oaks Golf Club - 22602 Hegar Road, Hockley, Texas 77447 - 1-800-865-4657 -
www.theoaksgolfhouston.com Houston Oaks has a wonderful country feel to it. It is an older course surrounded by mature trees. The design is interesting and the course plays friendly...7.0 stars (Trey).
Houstonian - This is a terrific layout in perfect shape. The only bad thing is the ability to get on
the course and the fees. You must be a guest of the hotel to play. There is water on just about every hole and the unique wooden cart paths take you over and through much of the water...9.0 stars (Trey).
Jersey Meadow Golf Club - 8606 Jones Rd., Houston, Texas 77040 - 713-896-0900 - Jersey
Meadow has never been one of my favorite courses, yet I have many friends who love it. I guess that I have always found too many hazards for my taste, but I cannot blame the course for that. It is a fairly short, tight course with small, well-guarded greens. The course has been in above- average shape when I have played it...6 stars (Trey)...5 stars (Mark).
Kingwood Cove Golf Course - 805 Hamblen Rd., Kingwood, Texas 77339 - 281-358-1155 - An
above average public course that has reasonable green fees and towering trees...5.5 stars (Mark).
Lake Houston Golf Club - 27350 Afton Way, Huffman, Texas 77336 - 281-324-1841 - I have always
enjoyed this course, but I have not played it in a few years. The design is very enjoyable, and the course is pretty. The greens were in good shape the last time I played it. For the price, one of the better buys around Houston...6 stars (Trey)...5.5 stars (Mark)
Longwood Golf Club - 13300 Longwood Trace, Cypress, Texas 77429 - 281-371-4100 - Bring your
driver to play this course. I played it from the tips one day and was hitting three woods to many greens. Don't be alarmed. They have several sets of tees. The course has an excellent design and is a pleasure to play amongst the numerous trees. The condition of the course has been very good every time I have played it...9 stars (Trey).
Meadowbrook Farms Golf Club - off Fry Rd., Katy, Texas 281-693-4653 - A very good links
course that has plenty of character. Some holes are distinctively links, while others meander through heavy brush...7 stars (Trey). This is the best kept public course I have played in Houston so far. Hills on the fairways, undulating, true greens, and a fair number of trees for its westside location, Meadowbrook Farms is a quality course...9 stars (Mark).
Memorial Park Golf Club - 6001 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77007 - 713-862-4033 - This
course is truly a landmark public course in Houston. It has hosted professional tournaments over the years and has withstood the test of time. In the middle of Houston, you do not get the big city feeling while playing this course. The design is fairly straight-forward, while the course uses the ancient trees and its length as defenses...7 stars (Trey)...8 stars (Mark).
Mill Ridge Golf Club - 1501 Mill Ridge Rd., Livingston, Texas 409-327-3535 - not played.
Newport on Lake Houston - Box 191, Crosby, Texas 77532 - 281-328-2541 - not played.
Old Orchard Golf Club - 13134 FM 1464, Richmond, Texas 77469 - 281-277-3300 -
www.oldorchardgolf.com - Old Orchard is truly a treat to play. You feel like you are actually playing in a pecan orchard. It is built on the former site of the Lazy C Ranch, which was at one time one of the finest quarter horse ranches in the world. The layout is superb, and the three nines have distinctly different feels. The course also changes with the seasons, since the pecan trees lose their leaves in the winter. If you play in the Fall, bring a bucket to pick up loose pecans...9 stars (Trey).
Pinecrest Golf Club - 3080 N. Gessner, Houston, Texas 77080 - 713-462-4914 -
www.pinecrestgolf.com - This is a fun course to play. It is not overly difficult and features a nice design...6 stars (Trey)...5 stars (Mark).
Rio Colorado Golf Club - Box 576, Bay City, Texas 77414 - 409-244-2955 - not played.
River Ridge Golf Course - 3133 Brazos Oak Ln., Sealy, Texas - 409-885-3333 - not played.
River Terrace Golf Club - 16777 Wallisville Rd., Channelview, Texas 77530 - 281-452-2183 - not
played.
Sharpstown Golf Club - 8200 Bellaire Blvd., Houston, Texas 77036 - 713-988-2099 - This was my
home course for high school golf. My only tournament victory came here. Sharpstown once hosted the Houston Open, but has since deteriorated. It is a good buy for the money, and features a nice layout...4 stars (Trey)...3 stars (Mark).
Sienna Plantation - A player's course. The layout is superb and requires plenty of shotmaking.
The greens are undulated and tiered, and the course can play very difficult depending on the pin placements. The course is unusually picturesque for the Houston area, as it winds through trees and marshland. For the price, Sienna Plantation is the best public course in Houston...9.25 stars (Trey).
Southwyck Golf Club - 2901 Clubhouse Dr., Pearland, Texas 77584 - 713-436-9999 - A great links
course, though the setting is changing as more houses are developed. This is the perfect course for a scramble. There are several gamble holes, most notably the par four 14th. From the white tees, many golfers take straight aim at the hole and hit the green in 1 over water. In the tradition of a links course, it can play easy or extremely difficult depending on the wind. For the money, Southwyck is one of the best deals in Houston...7 stars (Trey)...7.5 stars (Mark).
Stephen F. Austin Golf Course - Box 227, Park Dr., #38, San Felipe, Texas 77437 - 409-885-2811 -
This course is very unique and has some interesting holes. Some people love it and some hate it. I fall in the former category. It is a drive from Houston, but the course gives the feeling of being in the country...6 stars (Trey). Nestled among a grove of trees in the middle of farm and ranch land, this course makes up aesthetically for what it lacks in other ways...4.5 stars (Mark).
Texas National Golf Club - Box 585, Willis, Texas 77578 - 409-856-4233 - I have not played the
course in fifteen years, but I still have memories of a tough day. The course is surprisingly rolling for Houston and features some unique holes...6 stars (Trey).
Treeline Golf Club - 17505 N. Eldridge Parkway, Houston, Texas - 281-376-1542 -
www.treelinegolf.com - not played.
Tour 18 - 3102 FM 1960 East, Humble, Texas 77338 - 281-540-1818 - Tour 18 is a bit of a novelty.
It is actually 18 of the more famous holes in America. It is a great course for a scramble and it is fun to play Amen Corner just like the pros do. However, when the novelty runs out, so does the fun. I actually enjoy playing a course that has its own designed holes...7 stars (Trey).
Valley Lodge Golf Club - Box 500, Simonton, Texas 77476 - 281-436-1426 - not played.
Waterwood National Golfclub and Resort - #1 Waterwood Dr., Huntsville, Texas 77331 - 409-891-
5050 - www.escapetowaterwood.com - not played.
Wedgewood Golf Club - 5454 Highway 105 W., Conroe, Texas 77304 - 409-441-4653 - Wedgewood
is a fun, rolling course. You will think you were somewhere further north with the rolling terrain and the trees...7 stars (Trey). Leave your woods at home, because these fairways are so narrow, you'll have to rely heavily on your long irons. This is probably the most challenging course I have played in Houston...8 stars (Mark).
WindRose Golf Club - 281-370-8900 - www.wind-rose.com - not played.
World Houston Golf Course - 4000 Greens Rd., Houston, Texas 77032 - 281-449-8384 - It has been
a while since I played this course. It is a relatively straightforward course that can play difficult in the wind...5 stars (Trey)...4.5 stars (Mark). |
