The Houston Critics Review:

This is not your father's burrito stand. Taking the city by
storm in recent years is this month's favorite, Mission
Burritos or M.B., to you and me. The owner and founder,
Wendy Jones, has created a festive atmosphere and has put
together a menu which has something for both Tex-Mex
lovers and health food nuts, alike. The menu includes various
soups, salads, tacos, and tasty desserts, but the real reason to
go to M.B. is for the...(dramatic pause, to build suspense)...
burritos.

MAC, BEV and BOB sound like a folksinging trio from the
late sixties, but they are actually nicknames for three of the
most popular burritos at M.B. MAC is a Muy Awesome
Chicken burrito, BOB is a Big Ol' Beef burrito, and BEV is a
Big Excellent Vegetarian burrito (which, to carnivores like
Mark and Trey, is a paradox).

But why, you ask, is M.B. so popular with the younger
generation? Well, it depends on your definition of
"younger." For kids ages 3 to 12, the Munchkin Meal
provides a tastier and healthier alternative to that famous
kids meal at McBorings, and it comes with an exciting toy.
The 18 to 40 crowd loves M.B. because it is a BYOB
restaurant. No, you can't bring your own booze, beer or
bottle, but you can Build Your Own Burrito, and this is a
process which Trey and Mark have come to cherish.

The regular BYOB comes on a large 12 inch white or wheat
flour tortilla, and costs just $5.00. After going through the
assembly line, in which you tell the young M.B. employee
exactly what you want on your burrito, the finished product
is approximately the size of Earl Campbell's thigh. It's easily
two meals for most of us. For teenage boys with a bird-like
metabolism, or for Eddie Murphy's Klump family, M.B.
offers the Super BYOB on an 18 inch tortilla, for $8.25.
This thing will feed a small third-world country.

As we discovered from our gracious host, there is much
more to Mission Burritos than burritos. The Famous
QueMas Salad comes with mixed greens, roasted corn,
carrots, jicama, potatoes, mixed cheese, roasted red
peppers, tortilla croutons, with the option of adding fresh
grilled chicken, shrimp, beef or catfish. The Picas are
jalapenos stuffed with chicken, rice and white cheese and
they melt in your mouth. The M.B. grilled cheese is not of
the traditional variety. It is much like a quesadilla with white
corn tortillas. The tortilla soup is also a winner.

Although we were too stuffed to try dessert, M.B. offers
chocolate burritos, rice pudding, brownies, cookies and
lemon bars. The Woodway location offers Stucchi's Ice
Cream, as well.

Houston Critics has only one complaint about Mission
Burritos. They don't have locations in Sugar Land or Jersey
Village yet.
