Nestled among the skyscrapers of downtown
Houston is a small chain of restaurants serving food with a big taste. Treebeards has been serving what they describe as "Urban Southern Cooking" since 1978. |

To many Houstonians, and especially those working in the downtown
area, Treebeards has long been a favorite in the "Cajun Food" category. A number of Houston lawyers frequent the Cloister and Market Square locations, because they offer some of the best dining alternatives within walking distance of the courthouses. Although the menu has very few items to offer, they make up for quantity with quality. The ability to specialize in just a few dishes, such as red beans and rice, gumbo (duck, seafood and chicken & sausage), jambalaya and shrimp etoufee, guarantees that Treebeards produces the tastiest versions of each. In Mark's opinion, the shrimp etouffee and red beans and rice are even superior to those of Brennan's, at only about one-fourth the cost.
Trey recommends the red beans and rice and says the green beans
are some of the best he has ever sampled. Mark recommends "The Rookie," a large bowl with half shrimp etouffee and half red beans and rice. For dessert, the Italian Cream Cake is one of the finest served in Houston, and if you call 24 hours in advance, you can pick up an entire cake or pie baked fresh in the Treebeards bakery.
Treebeards also sells a cookbook of its recipes at each of its
locations, and Trey's mom and wife highly recommend this purchase for those of you who want to duplicate the great Treebeards taste at home.
So go and enjoy a meal at Treebeards, and tell them
Trey and Mark sent you!
